Tideswell wakes 2024 was another successful event with many traditional activities alongside some new ones. Feedback has been very positive but there have been comments on the relatively short procession last year – this is where you come in!
For 2025 we would like to work with the community to encourage greater participation in the carnival and also throughout the week. Wakes is very much a community event and we would encourage as many people as possible to take part in any way they can and feel comfortable doing so.
For the carnival itself, this might be to put a float together with friends or to enter in one of the non-float categories. The wakes committee are here to help and we would love to see a greater number of entries into the carnival. Whether you have done one before or if it is your first time, please give it a go. Those of us who have taken part in previous years can guarantee it is one the most enjoyable ways of experiencing the day.
Carnival day itself this year will be Saturday 28th June, plenty of time to get something organised with family / friends / work colleagues. It can seem like a daunting prospect if it is your first time but it doesn’t need to be complicated or elaborate and we are here for any help and advice you may require. There are also a large number of “Carnival Veterans” in the community who we are sure will be happy to help steer a “newbie” in the right direction. Remember, they all had a “first time” too! Taking part in Carnival is fun and exciting for people of all ages. It would be wonderful to see new people and groups enter this year.
Building a carnival float or putting a fancy dress theme together does not have to be complicated or expensive. Who can forget the incredible “Tidza Sheep” from last year! With a good idea and little planning and preparation, you can enjoy the event from a whole new perspective.
Tideswell Wakes Committee is dedicated to keeping our Wakes and Carnival tradition going but we need the community’s help!
For 2025 we are looking to increase the number of entry categories and increase the prize money including a new “best in carnival” category. Categories will be confirmed and published soon.
