Tideswell Cinema Live events

Passions run high at Tideswell Cinema throughout August, when our live events include opera, Shakespeare and a powerfully emotional play by Spanish poet and dramatist Lorca.

This month’s screenings – upstairs at the George Inn – begin with Mozart’s last opera La Clemenza di Tito, live from Glyndebourne, on Thur Aug 3 at 6pm.

Loosely based on the life of Roman emperor Titus, it tells the story of his spurned lover Vitellia, who plots revenge by urging Sesto, who loves her, to assassinate him.  After plot-twists involving fire, jealous rage and guilt, will Tito grant mercy or execution by wild beasts?

Another Titus is the tragic hero in Titus Andronicus, coming live from the RSC at Stratford on Wed Aug 9 at 7pm. Shakespeare’s goriest play depicts a Rome mired in decadence, its society torn asunder by murder, rape, even cannibalism. Starring David Troughton (Tony Archer in BBC R4’s The Archers) the play explores a moral hell, with parallels in recent atrocities in Bosnia, Rwanda and the Middle East.

Our live events conclude this month with Yerma, an update of Federico Garcia Lorca’s 1934 play, starring the award-winning Billie Piper as a young woman driven to desperation by her desire to have a child. Brought to us by NTLive from the Young Vic Theatre on Thur Aug 31 at 7pm, this production has returned for a limited run after five-star reviews last year.

La Clemenza di Tito is £15 (£12.50 concessions). Titus Andronicus and Yerma are £10 (£7.50 for under-19s).
