In case evidence were needed of what a poor summer we’vebeen having, in the 1 month since the last match report TCC have played just 2games of cricket (out of 9 scheduled). Neither of these were League matches, and as everyone else in the League has been in much the same boat (ha, ha) theupshot is that Tideswell remain in 4th place out of the 11 teams in theYorkshire & Derbyshire 5th Division. Back on 19th June a fixture was finally played v Alstonefield (not for want of trying). One of the main objectives was to get to grips with another great Alstonefield cricket tea, which was triumphantly achieved, although Alstonefield won the actual game.
The next time TCC made it out to the centre was on Saturday 16th July, when Chesterfield Barbarians 3rds came to Tideswell. After 12 overs of increasing drizzle the game was abandoned. The playing strip was recycled for the visit of Grindleford the following day for a friendly. At last the weather was sunny and warm, although as Grindleford brought a very junior XI the bowling was suitably lightweight, Grindleford making 61. Tideswell won. One benefit of the weather may be that the Sheffield Superkings v Tideswell tie scheduled for 25 June in the Y&D League Cup,which has yet to be contested, will end up being solved using a coin – though, judging by our earlier League encounter with these guys this would only approximate to a fair settlement if the Superkings’ captain were to be handed a double-headed 10p to toss.
Fixtures coming up: touring side Paddington Bears on Thursday 28 July from about 6:30. Then on Sunday 31 July St Thomas CC from 2p.m.
