The High Peak Diabetic self help group held an innovative training day at the Buckingham Hotel, Buxton recently.
Delegates learned of the latest trends in diabetes care from Beth Cooper, diabetes nurse, who used a quiz to blow away many myths about the condition.
Biomedical Scientist Sue Barber spoke about the genetics of the various types of Diabetes, and Peak Park volunteer Ian Taylor discussed the benefits of exercise. New techniques in glucose testing and insulin delivery, smoking cessation, and Protection of Vulnerable Adults were described.
The favourite item for many, was the talk from Nicola Crawford about the use of Diagnostic Dogs. Nicola showed a video of a child whose life was transformed by her “best friend”, a medical alert dog, who accompanies her to school, and alerts the teachers of impending medical crises.
The group would like to thank the High Peak Mayoral Charities for their support in subsidising the event. People whose lives are affected by diabetes are welcome to come along to all meetings. The training session this year was aimed not only at those newly diagnosed, but also individuals who care for patients, clients or friends who are diabetic.
