There are two films this month – our usual monthly screening, plus our annual evening celebration of the Oscars. On Thursday 23rd, we are showing ‘the best French film ever’, a claim by the French Film Academy. It is ‘Les Enfants Du Paradis’, made in 1945, and set amidst the glittering theatre world of 19th century Paris. The story revolves around the beautiful and free-spirited courtesan, Garance, and the four men who compete for her affections: a mime-artist, an actor, an aristocrat and a criminal. As the melodrama unfolds we are treated to one of cinema’s greatest love stories, a captivating tale of passion, deception and murder. This French film, with subtitles, will be shown as usual at 7.30pm, on Thursday 23rd February upstairs in The George, with Guest members welcome (£4).
On the evening following the Academy Awards ceremony in America, we will have our own Oscar Night, this year showing the 2016 Best Film winner, ‘Spotlight’. When the Boston Globe’s tenacious ‘Spotlight’ team of reporters delves into allegations of abuse in the Catholic Church, their year-long investigation uncovers a decades-long cover-up at the highest level of Boston’s religious, legal and government establishment, touching off a wave of revelations around the world. Described as “absolute brilliance”, “acted to perfection”, this film was a worthy recipient of the coveted Oscar. It will be shown on Monday 27th at 7.30pm in The George.
