Electronic wizardry creates theatrical magic in the Royal Shakespeare Company’s production of The Tempest, coming live from Stratford to Tideswell Cinema on Thur Jan 11at 7pm. Simon Russell Beale stars as magician Prospero who whips up a vast shipwrecking storm to bring his enemies to his island. Prospero’s attendant spirit Ariel literally takes to the air thanks to motion-capture sensors sending his image high above the audience, or transforming him into a tree or a winged monster. The live screening of this ground-breaking production is fully booked but you can still see the recorded encore on Tue Jan 24 at 7pm. Similarly, due to popular demand, you can book for the encore of Harold Pinter’s No Man’s Land on Tue Jan 17 at 7pm. Starring Sir Ian McKellen and Sir Patrick Stewart, this production was hugely popular at our live screening from Wyndham’sTheatre, London, in December.
We wind up our live events for January with an opera, Verdi’s Il Trovatore (the Troubador),from the Royal Opera House on Tue Jan 31 at 7.15pm. This grisly tale of long-harboured revenge in 16th century Spain is updated with modern costumes, an imposing on-stage tank and a lively gypsy scene.
Furtherahead, we have a choice of dates for the National Theatre’s acclaimed production of Amadeus – Thur Feb 2 live, or Tue Feb 21 for the encore. Musicians mingle with the actors in this revival of Peter Shaffer’s award-winning 1979 play examining the relationship of young Mozart with his insanely jealous rival, Salieri. Plays are £10 (£7.50 forunder-19s), opera is £15 (£12.50 concessions).
