Kitchen garden

Summer is over and autumn is here but there is still plenty going on in Tideswell’s Kitchen Garden. The record warmth of September has ripened the sweetcorn and filled out the apples and there is a bumper crop of blackberries and rosehips along the fences. There is still plenty of colour in the garden too with a lovely display of nasturtiums growing among the courgettes and squash. Try the leaves and flowers in a salad – the leaves have a nice peppery taste and the flowers add a cheerful splash of colour. As well as lots of red and yellow onions, we’ve dug up huge elephant garlic too, and as the tomatoes came to an end, one of our volunteers made green tomato chutney ‘with a kick’ Her secret recipe is given below.

October is apple month with many ‘Apple day’ events happening around the country. We are hoping to do a traditional apple pressing demonstration on Saturday 29 October, so please come along and maybe try a taste of fresh apple juice. There is also a delicious recipe for an Easy German apple cake below.

Our Kitchen Garden is open to all the community so come and have a go. It doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner or an expert, just join in the fun when you’re around and have a little free time – and it’s not all digging and hoeing, as well as providing fruit & vegetables for the lunch club our volunteers can enjoy the fruits of their labours too.

The kitchen garden is behind the village institute hall and the best time to meet us is on the first Saturday of the month at 10 am. Alternatively email Helen Grainger at wh.grainger@hotmail.co.uk or call Judy Cooke on 01298 872408, or see our Facebook page at the ‘Tideswell Kitchen Garden’.
