Tideswell Cinema’s glorious Glyndebourne season finishes with a flourish with a live screening of Berlioz’ opera Beatrice et Benedict on Tue Aug 9 at 6.30pm. Fittingly for summer, it’s a light and sunny opera based on Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, with the lovers sparring in a witty love-hate duel. One duet was described by a critic as a “marvel of indescribable lyrical beauty.” The London Philharmonic Orchestra is conducted by Robin Ticciati.
Then on Thur Sept 1 at 7pm we can look forward to an acclaimed production of Terence Rattigan’s masterpiece, The Deep Blue Sea, live from the National Theatre. Helen McCrory plays one of the greatest female roles in contemporary drama, set in post-war London in 1952. When Hester Collyer is found by her neighbours after a failed suicide attempt, the story of her tempestuous affair with a former RAF pilot and the breakdown of her marriage to a High Court judge begins to emerge.
The opera is £15 (£12.50 concessions), the play £10 (£7.50 for under-19s). Book through tideswellcinema@gmail.com or 07941 178863.
