Tideswell Cinema – Live Events

The Royal Shakespeare Company, in this 400th yearafter Shakespeare’s death, breaks new ground with the first black Hamlet in itshistory. Paapa Essiedu, a 25-year-old Ghanaian actor, has been showered withpraise for his self-possessed, mercurial yet vulnerable prince, supported ablyby a mainly black cast. You can watch this landmark performance, live from Stratford, at Tideswell Cinema on Wed June 8 at 7pm.

The following night – Thur June 9 at 7pm – you have a secondchance to see one of National Theatre Live’s outstanding broadcasts of lastyear, The Audience, with Helen Mirren’s award-winning performance as the Queen.The play lets us eavesdrop on the monarch’s private weekly audiences with asuccession of prime ministers from Churchill to Cameron.

A pair of live operatic treats round off our June screenings,including our first ever broadcast from Glyndebourne. Rossini’s joyous comedy The Barber of Seville has not beenseen at the Glyndebourne Festival for 34 years, and this welcome return (on TueJune 21 at 6.30pm) stars Danielle de Niese as Rosina, accompanied by theLondon Philharmonic Orchestra. Werther, often considered Massenet’s finest work, comes tous from the Royal Opera House on Mon June 27 at 7pm. Starring Italian tenor Vittorio Grigolo as the eponymous poet pining for love of the unattainable Charlotte(Joyce DiDonato), this passionate opera is conducted by Antonio Pappano.
