Tideswell Cinema’s live events this month get off to a soaring start with La Traviata, one of Verdi’s finest operas, live from the Royal Opera House on Thur Feb 4 at 6.45pm.
This deeply romantic opera directed by Richard Eyre, tells the story of Paris courtesan Violetta (played by Russian soprano Venera Gimadieva) who breaks society’s conventions and sacrifices all for love. It is fully booked but we do have a cancellation list.
Then on Thur Feb 25 at 7pm we have Shakespeare’s As You Like It, broadcast live from the National Theatre, which gained a five-star review in the Guardian.
This energetic comedy of love and change focuses on Rosalind (Rosalie Craig) who disguises herself as a boy and falls spectacularly in love. In its first production of the play for 36 years, the National Theatre goes for the ‘wow’ factor with a Forest of Arden that grows before your eyes as office chairs and tables rise up to form a tangle of trees.
And finally, just a peek forward to Thur March 3, when we have an acclaimed new comedy, Hangmen, broadcast live from the Wyndham’s Theatre, London, at 7pm. This savagely funny, award-winning production centres on Harry (David Morrissey) the second-best hangman in England. Set in Harry’s Oldham pub on the day hanging was abolished, the local celebrity ponders his future in lively exchanges with his customers.
The opera is £15 (concessions £12.50), the plays £10 (£7.50 for young people under 19).
