Stage on Screen at the George

Jane Eyre comes home to the Peak District when Tideswell Cinema screens the National Theatre’s highly-praised adaptation of the novel, live on Tue Dec 8 at 7pm, upstairs at the George.
Charlotte Bronte visited Hathersage in 1845, using it as a setting for her story of the spirited orphan who grows up to challenge the imperious and secretive Mr Rochester. Bronte based Rochester’s Thornfield Hall on North Lees Hall and named her heroine after the local Eyre family who built it. This production’s stark set amplifies the impact of Jane’s swirling emotions.
Dark passions continue on Thur Dec 10 at 7.15pm when we screen two operatic masterpieces about jealousy and revenge: Cavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci. Antonio Pappano conducts this live performance from the Royal Opera House, with a world-class cast including Eva-Maria Westbroek and Aleksandrs Antonenko.
And to round off our live screenings for December we have a Christmas crowd-pleaser from the Royal Ballet, The Nutcracker, performed live on Wed Dec 16 at 7.15pm. Choreographed by Peter Wright, it stars Lauren Cuthbertson as the Sugar Plum Fairy and Matthew Golding as the Prince, while Boris Gruzin conducts Tchaikovsky’s glittering score.
Ballet and opera are £15 (concessions £12.50), Jane Eyre £10 (£7.50 for young people 18 & under).
