Willow and Leather

The cricket season started for TCC in late April, when the sun was still shining, with a friendly v Youlgreave Lodge, who are in Yorkshire & Derbyshire Div. 4 this season.  The hosts were fairly quickly dismissed for a total of 63 (3 wickets to Pete Nash), and Tideswell reached this so quickly that it was agreed they could bat on. At close of play they had 143-7, of which 38* was scored by Dan Shirt.

Tides well’s first 3 league fixtures brought no conclusion, but a handy 25 points when Baslow 2nds conceded as unable to field a team. A brave attempt to complete the first home game (Chesterfield 3rds) was unsuccessful after a Tideswell knock of 119-9 in steady rain then saw the match abandoned at tea. Next up at home were Sheffield Collegiate 2nds, but this one, like most on 9 May, was ruled out by the previous week’s almost continuous rain.

Meanwhile the friendly season opened with a match on Hathersage’s ground against Hope Valley. In a very enjoyable game, Tideswell came up just short of Hope Valley’s 200, although it should be said that the Valley kept their opening bowlers on almost without change to achieve this.

On 16 May Tideswell were away at Richmond CC in the League, and although the home side were bowled out, their 173 was exactly 100 more than Tideswell could manage. So after 4 scheduled league games, just one of which has been played, TCC are 4th (of 8) in the 5th Division.

Coach Stuart Scoffins will be resuming coaching on 28 May. As last year, a group of 8-11 year olds will be getting coaching after school on a Thursday, followed by a slightly older group at about 5.

We need players of all ages to bolster the team, both this season and in the future. If you fancy a game, please do get in touch.
