Church Visit

On Tuesday 23rd September, Class 5 visited The church of St John the Baptist to find out about people from the past and our church’s history. We found out lots of interesting facts which none of us knew. For example, we found out that the church is around 600 years old!

While we were there, we had to answer lots of historical questions about the church. On the sheet, we drew a few sketches, and hunted for clues to find the answers. In the church we counted how many carvings of ‘green men’ there were in the woodwork. There were around four which we could find. We also went into the De Bower chapel and found out that it shouldn’t really be called after the De Bower family because a family called De Bower never lived in Tideswell.

After we had been inside the Church, we went outside and found out even more facts! We found out that a man called Nicholas Garlick’s head was buried somewhere in the Churchyard. Another great fact is that a Tideswell citizen called George Sheldon died in a snowstorm, on his way to the Peak Forest in 1805.

At the institute, we created a brass rubbing picture of Robert and Isabella Lytton and Bishop Pursglove. We also did a green man picture. It was a great day and very interesting.

We want to say a big thank you to Mr Black and everyone who was part of Tideswell Arts Festival for making it such a great visit.
