Support Dogs talk

Miller’s Dale & District WI’s June speaker was the Reverend Jane Sharp and her dog Forster; her subject was entitled ‘Support Dogs’. Jane gave us a most interesting and thought-provoking talk.

‘Support Dogs’ originated in and are based in Sheffield, although they supply trained dogs nationwide. These dogs provide ‘disability assistance’ to improve people’s quality of life and are trained to assist their owners by carrying out very specific tasks for these people. Two examples given are that they can help in cases of Epilepsy sufferers by giving them advanced warning of an on-coming seizure; they also support children with Autism.

It is an amazing Charity that runs on donations only, and it is unbelievable how much help these trained dogs give to their owners. It costs a lot to train each dog – some of these costs are reduced a little by volunteers who foster the dogs whilst being trained.

Members were very impressed by the excellence behaviour of Forster – her support dog.

The report from the AGM was then read and the resolution to promote ‘Organ Donation’ had been passed unanimously.

Details for our visit to Shardlow were finalised; we are hoping to visit Feeley Priory near Nottingham In August. Our next meeting is on 14th July at 7.30 in Litton Village Hall; The Speaker is Mrs. Gill Strakes – the subject is ‘Sheep to Shawl’.
