Litton Parish Matters

This year’s Annual Parish Meeting was well attended and it provided Councillors with confirmation that they are doing what residents want and expect them to do. It also helped them to shape the Council’s aims and work programme for 2014 – 15 which will be on the Council’s web site in July. Thank you to all those who attended.

Our overall aim is to get our projects completed and our services and systems running smoothly and within budget, so we have a well run organization when the new Council is formed after the May 2015 election. A key aspect of this is the creation of a Council handbook and the development of the web site to publish the contents of the handbook so residents know what and how we do, and get up to date information about what is happening.

At the APM we asked about the completion of the Memorial Garden in the cemetery; the foundations being on the right hand side as you enter the cemetery. Two options were presented to the meeting and it was clear people preferred option one which involves the construction of a long stone seat and in the centre of the site a stone container for flowers, both built using traditional limestone walling techniques. There will then be a low hedge planted around the site, and some planting inside including the laying of turf to allow for the burial of ashes and the placing of memorial plaques. This facility does not currently exist with ashes having to be placed in graves.

The Council has been offered a carved stone plaque inscribed with words from a Gaelic rune Deep Peace of the Quiet Earth and this will be set in the stone seat. It has also been more offered a surprise and generous financial contribution towards to the cost of building the Memorial Garden and this means that the Council will be able to do more and in a shorter time scale than it anticipated.

In the light of these donations if people wished to make their own contribution then they could do so. If anyone would like to discuss this confidentially ,and without any commitment, please give me a ring before the end of August – John Evans (Chair) on 01298 871364.
