The hamlet of Hollinsclough was the starting point for the group’s first ascent of Chrome Hill, the Dragon’s Back. Conditions looked idea. However, almost immediately, two men warned us of strong winds at the top. After some climbing the path curved to reveal a fantastic view of the dragon but we sat huddled at base camp unable to ignore the gale force winds. Helpfully we passed on the earlier advice to some other female walkers, one of whom retorted, ‘ Take no notice of what fellas tell you! ‘ But on this one occasion we did and followed our knowledgeable guide on good lower level paths. The route gave constantly changing views of these fascinating reef – hills. Eventually one path seemed to lead to a pub where we sat at a picnic table in warm sunshine. Perhaps mission hadn’t been accomplished but it was an excellent day nevertheless.
Hollinsclough is an attractive place. There’s a flower festival in the chapel this month and teas are served in the village hall on summer Sundays.
