Saturday 21 June to Sunday 29 June Carnival Day – 28 June 2014
The brilliant success of last year and an absolutely cracking week weather-wise (apart from the torrential downpours on the Crown Scaffolding lads on the first Saturday) saw that the Wakes Week events were very well attended and the carnival spirit was well and truly alive!
We were overwhelmed last year at the excitement in the village and we hope this year has the same buzz. We can’t guarantee the weather but we do have waterproof ponchos in stock so there are no excuses to not get into your fancy dress! It was great to see such a colourful and musical carnival parade and brilliant to see some of the local businesses being represented with a float. We have already been contacted by people who want to return on holiday to the village this year as some of them had ‘stumbled’ across the festivities and enjoyed what Tidza had to offer!
This year is set to be just as good and with the L’Eroica event coming through the village on our first Sunday should mean that June will be quite a lively month in the calendar.
We really encourage other people from surrounding areas and from farther afield to enjoy what we have to offer here in Tideswell so that they support our local businesses and help in keeping the village lively and affluent.
For anyone who is not familiar with the work of the Tideswell Wakes Festivities team, as well as organising the Wakes Week events and other community events in the year, we also aim to raise money for local organisations and charities. These generous donations from local residents and visitors alike meant that we were able to help those who requested a donation towards the work they do for others in the local community and surrounding areas.
We appreciate that not everyone has lots of spare cash to just give away but people have been immensely generous and we are proud that we have helped our local associations. The Under 8’s Football Team are wearing the “I Heart Tidza Wakes” branded kit and we hope this will encourage other children in the village to continue being involved in sport and representing the village. Donations were also made to the residents of Nicholson Court to enable them to continue to enjoy their outings and events throughout the year. The High Peak Night Stop Project in Buxton were immensely pleased to receive a donation towards the work they do to support vulnerable young, single homeless people who have a connection to the High Peak but find themselves in difficult circumstances. The committee of Cressbrook Social Club also received a contribution to assist with the cost of re-decorating their club and Tideswell Living History Club also required some assistance for the decoration of the “memory box” in Fountain Square. We hope these contributions will help and please do get in touch if you are involved with a local club or association and would benefit from assistance in 2014.
Although the team look to be all about the fun, we take our committee seriously so we would like to inform you of the road closures on the next page.
Please note that on the dates and times on the next page, the Wakes Committee is planning to seek authority to implement temporary or rolling road closures. If anyone has any concerns, please get in contact, before 24th March 2014, with any of the Committee Members or drop us an email to committee@tideswellwakes.info.
Wakes Week just can’t happen without a team of willing and reliable volunteers who help us to put on enjoyable, fun but above all safe events. Volunteer Marshals are required for all the main events during Wakes Week that require a temporary road closure. Although we do have a good number of people on the Committee, not all of us can be used as Marshals for every event and we usually need a minimum of 12-15 Marshals. If you are willing to be a Marshal, please e-mail committee@tideswellwakes.info or just get in contact with any Committee Member and tell them when you will be available. Many thanks in anticipation.
It is with sadness that our Royalty will be retiring this year so we are keen for anyone who would like to be elected, love Wakes Week and want to be part of the festivities on royal duties to please get in touch.
We will be re-launching our website nearer the time and this will be updated with all the latest news on the run up to Wakes Week. Please also remember to follow us on Facebook and Twitter and as always follow us in the Village Voice! If you would like to get in touch with any of the team or would like to know more about how you can get involved please come and see us at the Food Festival in May. The team will be there as usual! See you in June.
