This month’s choice is ‘Charlie Wilson’s War’, the 2007 film starring Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts and Philip Seymour Hoffman. It is a drama based on the true story of Texan congressman Charlie Wilson’s covert dealings with the Afghans during the Soviet war. Wilson was a minor league congressman, but sat on two major foreign policy and covert-ops committees. His involvement with Afghanistan began after one of his lady friends persuaded him to visit an Afghan refugee camp in Pakistan, which moved him deeply.
The film received five Golden Globe nominations, and Philip Seymour Hoffman won the Oscar as Best Supporting Actor.
It will be shown on Thursday 20th February at 19.30 in the George; guest members are welcome (£4.75 a ticket).
Please note that this is a different date from the one in Tideswell Cinema’s printed programme.
Advance notice: April’s film, always selected late in the season, will be the Oscar nominated ‘Captain Phillips’.
