Singers First

Later this year, Tideswell Singers in association with Hallam Choral Society, will be performing a ‘First’ in the north of England.

In celebration of the centenary of Benjamin Britten’s birth, the choirs will perform ‘The World of the Spirit’ for choir, orchestra, soloists and narrators. This piece is rarely heard and although it has been performed recently in Germany and the US, there are no records of any performances in the north of England.

The work was commissioned by the BBC in 1938 when Britten was 24. A new edition was made in 1996 and little is known about performances in the intervening years. The accompanying work will be Gounod’s Saint Cecilia Mass, a glorious work in an operatic style, as expected from this composer.

This will be a very rare opportunity to hear two wonderful works from two well respected, established choirs who enjoy working together to create a memorable occasion.

The performance will take place in Ecclesall Parish Church, Sheffield at 19.30 on Saturday 23 November.
