July brims with live music, drama and opera beamed directfrom London, Glyndebourne and even the Netherlands to our very own Tideswell Cinema, upstairs at The George. First we have the Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company’s Romeoand Juliet, live from London’s Garrick Theatre on Thur July 7 at 7pm. The star-studded cast includes Sir Derek Jacobi as Mercutio, Meera Syal as the nurse, and as the ill-fated lovers, Lily James (from TV’s Downton Abbey and War& Peace) and Richard Madden (Game of Thrones).
Then on Tue July 12 at 5.30pm (early start!) you can see thebiggest opera production Glyndebourne has ever staged – Wagner’s Die Meistersinger. Filmed at the 2011 festival, it features an 80-strong orchestra (the London Philharmonic), 80 singers, 36 actors and enormous sets on a huge stage. On Thursday July 21 we’re back to Shakespeare with the first live broadcast from London’s Almeida Theatre – Richard III. Starring Ralph Fiennes as the villainous king (‘Now is the winter of our discontent’) and Vanessa Redgrave as his sworn enemy Queen Margaret, this production is directed by Rupert Goold.
And our final live event this month, on Sat July 23 at 7pm,is a rapturous evening of music and fun, courtesy of the “King of the Waltz”Andre Rieu. Beamed directly from an annual spectacular open air concert in the maestro’s home town of Maastricht, it features his 60-piece Johann Strauss Orchestra, sopranos, tenors and special guests.
