League Hathersage 2nd XI beat TCC on 28 May at Hathersage.Richard Taylor took 4-35 as the home team knocked up 144, in reply to which Tideswell managed 130 (Ian Hoverd 45), so it was a close game against the team who were then topping the 5th Division.
On 4 June Tideswell played Coal Aston 4th XI away, and batted first, making 196-7 (Ian Hoverd 58*, Tim Pepper 34, Rob Weston also 34). In Coal Aston’s reply, the captain made 25 before Dan Shirt caught him off his own bowling, but none of the rest got into double figures. Dan Shirt took 6-20 as Coal Aston subsided to 71 all out. A week later, Tideswell played Sheffield Super Kings on the Transport Ground. The Super Kings are new to the League and will probably soon rise from the 5th Div. Batting first, they posted a daunting 242-9.With rain threatening, Tideswell put up the shutters, so that when the match was finally abandoned they were on 71-7. This meant 12 points for Tideswell and 15 for the Super Kings. Well, it could have gone either way…And on 18 June Hallam 5th XI visited Tideswell. Dan Shirt (39) top-scored in the home side’s 148-7 on a slow, damp wicket, a total that Hallam could not get close to, though they batted out the overs.Tideswell are now in fourth position with 4 wins out of 8 games.
Friendlies
Thanks to 2 games cancelled by the opposition and 3 lost to rain, there were just 2 friendly fixtures in the last month. One was v Dore Moor at Tideswell (on Wednesday 8 June). TCC made 116 (Pete Nash 26*), and by half way the visitors were well behind the required scoring rate. However their inclusion of a top Y&D League batsman in the middle order paid dividends asthe run rate accelerated, and the target was reached with 1 over left. The other friendly game was played at Grindleford on Sunday 29 May. Tideswell batted first and made 123, with Ian Hoverd scoring 28. Grindleford scraped home on 125-9, Pete Nash taking 3-20. So a win for Grindleford, but as Tideswell could only muster 9 men for the game, and it took all 11 of Grindleford’s team to beat them, let’s just say it was close.
Other cricket
On 4 June Litton’s Joe Rooke, who occasionally plays in friendlies for TCC, made an outstanding 101* as Grindleford’s 1st XI beat Ridgeway in the Y&D 3rd Div. Names you may not know Ian Hoverd is often Tideswell’s top scorer at present. Ian(26), like captain Greg Taylor, is a dentist who gained his qualifications and now practices in Sheffield.
