Cressbrook film club – May film/Village Voice

Last film of the season at CRESSBROOK FILM CLUB Friday 13th May Bridge of Spies (cert 12, 140mins) Stars Tom Hanks and Mark Rylance, directed by Steven Spielberg.

The film is based on the true story of James Donovan played by Tom Hanks, an insurance claims lawyer from Brooklyn.

In 1957 when Russia and the USA were involved in the Cold War the CIA enlists Donovan’s support to negotiate the release of captured American U-2 pilot Gary Powers, in exchange for notorious Soviet spy Rudolph Abel played by Mark Rylance (Oscar winner, best supporting actor). Like the Cold War itself, there are no big battles – its a film about the tactics which took place in courtrooms and offices.

It ticks all the boxes from acting to writing to production design to cinematography, all brought together by a master of his medium, Steven Spielberg.

Doors open 7.30 for 8pm, the bar will be open for refreshments before and after the film and as ever, there’s a warm welcome for old and new members and guests.
