I am so proud of the whole community’s efforts when I asked for donations for the refugees in Kos. Everyone has been so generous donating old things, new things, baby things, money. Thank you so much! I had seen lots of footage of the refugee crisis on the television over the summer and it saddened me so deeply to see people suffering in such a way. I didn’t know how I could help, so when a lady I know gave me the number of some of her friends, who were actually going to Kos and driving the van themselves over there, I knew I wanted to help.
That is how the community of Tideswell became involved when I asked for donations. I wrote a letter to the families in school appealing for donations, then another teacher became involved, putting the letter on a local Facebook site. Initially I thought we would get a few bags, maybe enough to fill a 4×4. But the people of Tideswell well and truly beat this!
The school was inundated with donations, filling the corridors, office and staff room. I could not believe the response! Not only did people donate used items, but some people went out and bought new sleeping bags, camping equipment, gave money, children in my class chose teddies to give away! In the end all the donations nearly didn’t fit in the van they had to borrow to fetch it! It is heart-warming and makes me so proud to be part of this community.
