A fruitful kitchen garden is an inspiring sight for anyone who enjoys their food, and the Community Garden behind the Institute has certainly not disappointed this year. July has seen our best, positively bulging crop of blackcurrants yet, and a huge bed of the juiciest strawberries. Also on the go are fresh herbs, broad, runner and French climbing beans, shallots, onions and garlic, beetroot, spinach, chard, broccoli, courgettes, pumpkins and squashes, rhubarb, dessert gooseberries… not to mention massive tomatoes in the greenhouse (a couple are now the size of my baby son James’ head!). I am thrilled that my maternity leave has enabled me to be around to start helping out, and of course to enjoy some of the harvest (the Garden also provides seasonal ingredients for the Luncheon Club’s meals). It’s great to be able to recognise the plants that produce the food we can easily take for granted, and supermarket fruit and veg is rarely as tasty! Anyone who lends a hand is free to help themselves, and you don’t have to commit to regular hours – just pop along when you can (I certainly can’t guarantee set times with a newborn to look after!). Contact Judy Cooke if you are interested, on 01298 872408. We’re also on Facebook – search for the ‘Tideswell Kitchen Garden’ group.
