Community Awards

The Tideswell Community Awards took place at the Horse & Jockey this year. They provided a great buffet, which was enjoyed by all. The parish council have run the awards for the past four years.

Initially the winner was given a memento at the Annual Parish Meeting, but the annual presentation has grown into an event of its own.

This year, Chairman of the Council, Sue Barber, presented a small gift from the parish council to each of three winners.

Alison Chapman won the award for the “unsung hero”. Her daughter accepted the award on her behalf.

The under 25 section winner was Ben Loftus, who has done so much for Tideswell Scouts. The Community Award was presented to Sandra Howard, who has represented Tideswell in many ways. Both Ben and Sandra told us that their families had managed to keep their success a secret, which made the presentation all the more enjoyable.

The awards were first mooted by Helen Royle

It was a heart-warming evening at the Horse and Jockey when the community awards were presented last month. Initially they were presented during a parish council meeting. However it has gradually become a much more celebratory evening – not only for the winners but their family and friends or anyone who just wishes to come along.

I’d like to thank all the parish councillors for their part in making it such a successful evening. The idea too of an Unsung Hero award was wonderful. Well, this year it’s a Heroine!

This is the fourth year of the community awards and it is always a privilege to hear of the many different ways in which the winners have given of their time freely for the benefit of the people of Tideswell.
