The thought of putting on thick socks and boots on a hot day last month didn’t appeal. I knew that other group members wouldn’t be on this walk but I had to be at the meeting point in case anyone new turned up. In vain I waited for that tall dark handsome stranger! A short walk seemed the best idea.
Unexpectedly I was soon enjoying the poetry festival in Litton, looking through a volume of poems by a lifelong resident and reading the children’s poems about what they’d like to put in their magic boxes. The old red phone box contained others. My favourite was The Difference 10p Can Make with the story of a call made from this box by the author to a young lady.
I’ve always liked the enclosed world of Cressbrook Dale and on this occasion stopped to benefit from its coolness. Lunch was on the village green in Cressbrook, always a tranquil place. It was a leisurely and enjoyable walk though it had seemed quiet without my usual companions.
