On the Beat

Tideswell remains a safe and enjoyable place to live. During the past 12 months we have seen another reduction both in crime and anti-social behaviour.

With summer time approaching however – the season of carnivals and wakes – we need to be aware that as well as a relaxing atmosphere, the sunshine can also sometimes spark a slight increase in anti-social behaviour and alcohol-related incidents, as people spend more time outdoors with their friends. Problems that arise in the summer months range from dropping litter and using foul language to causing criminal damage to property.
Young people also often gather in large groups in public areas and, although the majority of local youths are well behaved, anti-social behaviour can sometimes result from these gatherings. Please be aware of the dangers and risks posed by such activities, both to victims and to those taking part. Note also that Derbyshire police will confiscate and dispose of alcohol from anyone under the age of 18 seen drinking in a public place.
Finally for now, you may be aware that on 2 July 2011 an incident occurred at Summer Cross in Tideswell where two horses and a cow were shot dead by John Tibbles. Mr Tibbles, aged 53, was charged and convicted of these crimes in November 2011 and sentenced at Derby Crown Court to a total of three years’ imprisonment. He was released from prison on 31 January 31 2013 with the following conditions:
Not to enter the area of Summer Cross, Tideswell, under any circumstances.
Not to enter Tideswell unless in the company of a family member at all times.
Whilst travelling to and from Tideswell must only be a passenger in a vehicle whilst in this area.
If anyone sees John Tibbles breach any of these conditions, call Derbyshire Police on 101. Alternatively, use the 999 number if you consider the sighting to be an emergency.
