September is a bumper month at Tideswell Cinema, with five live events being broadcast upstairs at the George Inn.
First up is Julie – a modern update of Strindberg’s Miss Julie – live from the National Theatre, on Thur Sept 6 at 7pm. Set in contemporary London, newly-single Julie throws a wild late-night party. Julie stars Vanessa Kirby, winner of a BAFTA award for her portrayal of Princess Margaret in TV’s The Crown.
Next is Shakespeare’s exuberant comedy The Merry Wives of Windsor, live from the RSC in Stratford, on Wed Sept 12 at 7pm. This comic production is set in Essex, complete with ornamental flamingos and golf-carts. Falstaff, played by David Troughton, haplessly pursues the wives, played with conspiratorial glee by Beth Cordingly and Rebecca Lacey.
The following night, Thur Sept 13 at 7pm, we turn to opera – Puccini’s La Boheme – presented by Opera Australia on an enormous floating outdoor stage in the spectacular Sydney Harbour. Updated to Paris in 1968, a year of violent student unrest, the tragic romance is played out on cobble stoned streets sparkling with snow.
Then on Thur Sept 20 at 7.15pm we’re treated to the Australian Ballet’s production of The Merry Widow. This light-hearted, beautifully-danced entertainment transports us to the ballrooms of Paris filled with tangled affairs and jealous lovers.
At nearly 80, Sir Ian McKellen has hinted King Lear will be his last big Shakespearean role, and we are privileged to see it live from the Duke of York Theatre, London, on Thur Sept 27 at 7pm. The Guardian said the production dazzles, with “McKellen shimmering brightest at its dark, tormented heart.”
Julie, The Merry Wives of Windsor and King Lear are £10; La Boheme and The Merry Widow are £15 (12.50 concessions).
