Tideswell Cinema Live

Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde, the Royal Ballet, Wagner and Alan Bennett – they’re all being broadcast live this month at Tideswell Cinema, upstairs at the George Inn.

Our events kick off on Thur Oct 4 at 7.15pm with The Winter’s Tale, live from the GlobeTheatre, London – an open-air candle-lit reconstruction of Shakespeare’soriginal venue. This great play about human folly, monsters, gods and disasters, contains the world’s most famous stage direction: ‘Exit, pursued by a bear.’

Then on Tue Oct 9, live at 7.15pm, we have the last in the Vaudeville Theatre’s Oscar Wilde Season: The Importance of Being Earnest. This fresh, and surprisingly sexy take on the original, stars Sophie Thompson as an unusually youthful Lady Bracknell.

Our Royal Ballet treat this month is Mayerling, live from the Royal Opera House on MonOct 15 at 7.15pm. With music by Liszt and choreography by Kenneth Macmillan, it tells the story of Crown Prince Rudolf, a royal heir plagued by dangerous desires, family secrets and political intrigue.

Then on Sunday, Oct 28 at 5 pm, we have opera, Die Walkure, part of Wagner’s Ring Cycle conducted by Antonio Pappano, live from the Royal Opera House. Wagner’s supernatural world of gods and heroes includes the unforgettable Ride of the Valkyries.

Finally, our live event on Nov 1 at 7 pm will appeal to the many fans of Alan Bennett: Allelujah– his first new play for six years – from the Bridge Theatre, London. Focusing on an old people’s ward in an NHS hospital under threat, it is full of Bennett’s dry wit and wry human observation.

The Winter’s Tale, Importance of Being Earnest, Mayerling and Die Walkure are £15 (£12.50concessions); Allelujah is £10.
