What a glorious day we had on June 10th. After a slightly cool & damp (the green) start the weather became ‘Phew what a scorcher’ &, whilst it didn’t literally turn into glass, the green raced. It was so fast that there were frequent shouts of ‘Now the ditch’s full you can play on the green’. For those of you not familiar with this sometime often heard bowling phrase it means that bowlers couldn’t adjust the speed of their bowls & bowled off the green. Thanks to everyone who came, consumed the excellent food, gambled on the football card & raffle & bowled with varying degrees of success. Which leads me seamlessly on to say well done to Angela Wood, winner of the women’s comp, & Roger White, winner of the men’s. Roger won one of his games with Barbara against me & A.N. Other 33/2 which must be a record breaker, how embarrassing’s that? My polite request for 10% of his winnings after such a major contribution to his grand total was treated with scorn & contempt. I had to retreat to SHOB (the Spiritual Home of Bowling aka The Star) to sit in a corner quietly blubbing into my beer. Thanks to all the club members who organised, catered & ran the event enabling us to raise £395.80 for Cancer Research UK – well done. An especial mention of Flinty for his stalwart performance on the microphone … who could be heard in Matlock, & that was without the PA system. The club would to acknowledge an especially generous donation from a local business.
