It’s surprising how enjoyable a familiar route can be given good weather. The ancient fort of Carl Wark was the first landmark and Burbage Bridge, described in a guide book as an enchanting spot, was next. An artist was sitting close to the path and I’d have liked to have seen the work in progress but sensed interruption wasn’t welcome. However catching up with my companions ahead, they told me that she’d readily agreed to them looking at the watercolour. A friendly park ranger pointed out a good path for us before turning to chat to young cyclists.
By afternoon family groups were walking up from the car park near Surprise View. Children and some adults too were giving names to the unusual rock shapes. Approaching the ice cream van I was repeatedly urged to mention that we were from Tideswell but paid little attention being more concerned about the length of the queue. Eventually I noticed the Peak District Dairy sign, did as instructed and massive ice creams were the result.
There were so many people about on this beautiful Sunday that if the artist had chatted with everyone her painting would never have
been finished.
