If you love opera, prepare for a Sunday afternoon extravaganza – Rossini’s William Tell – live from the Royal Opera House at Tideswell Cinema on Sunday July 5 at 2.45pm.
Based on the story of Swiss hero William Tell who longs to liberate his people from Austrian occupation, the music is soaring, majestic and fiercely difficult for singers. Italian rising star Damiano Michieletto is in the title role, and yes, he does shoot an apple off his son’s head.
It is four hours long including two intervals, so bring a cushion and you may well want to book a pre- or post-opera meal at the George.
Following that on Thur July 16 at 7pm we have Everyman, live from the National Theatre, with award-winning actor Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave) in the title role.
Everyman is successful, popular, riding high when Death comes calling. Can he change his life and find someone to speak up for him before Death catches up? English poet laureate Carol Ann Duffy has re-written this 15th-century drama for the modern age.
And on Wed July 22 at 7pm we bring you the Merchant of Venice, live from the Royal Shakespeare Company, with acclaimed Israeli actor Makram J. Khoury making his RSC debut as Shylock. Patsy Ferran also stars as Portia – you may remember her as Jim in the National Theatre’s Treasure Island at Christmas.
William Tell is £15 (£12.50 concessions), the plays £10. Book through tideswellcinema@gmail.com or 01298 872993. Cheques (to Tideswell Cinema) may be left at Tideswell Stores or posted to Tideswell Cinema, c/o 1 Manchester Rd, Tideswell, SK17 8LL. Please write name/date of production on back of cheque.
