The Midland East Regional Conference was held at the end of September at the Cavendish Golf Club, Buxton. Delegates from all over East Midlands attended along with Regional Presidents from other areas.
The business was carried out very efficiently and in a friendly way. In the afternoon, two speakers talked on the disturbing facts of modern life.
A representative from the SAFE charity spoke of his work in the charity to release young women from trafficking throughout the UK.
He showed a video of a young girl who had been taken while on holiday in Greece, and ‘befriended’ by an older man. When the family went home, the girl remained and was then subjected to a horrific catalogue of sexual abuse. The Soroptimists agreed to talk in schools about the dangers, and to highlight the plight of such young women.
The following speaker was from the Women’s Aid Project in Glossop, which the Soroptimists in Buxton already support.
Both charities were given cheques to help with their work, and promise of further assistance in the future.
