A powerful piece of theatre set in the First World War is coming to the village at the end of May when Tideswell Community Players perform their Spring Production.
The Accrington Pals, by Peter Whelan, is the true life story about men who went away to fight and the close-knit community they left behind.
On the eve of war the young men of Accrington hear the call to arms and become the smallest town in England to raise a Pals Volunteer Brigade. When they arrive in France, the brutal reality of the trenches is beyond anything they had imagined. Back home in the streets and back yards nothing can be the same again for mothers, wives, daughters and lovers.
The pals are both the women of Accrington and the young men who volunteered. Though set in Lancashire the tale is relevant to any community that sent its young men off to the war a hundred years ago. A sobering play with tragedy, it is also funny and moving. It commemorates the price a small community had to pay, but is in no way glorified.
