Tideswell Cinema

“Captain Phillips” Did you know that you don’t have to travel miles to go to the cinema?! Although Tideswell Cinema is a membership organisation, it is open for guest members to come to see any of our films, which are always shown upstairs in The George at 7.30pm, and usually on a Thursday evening, every month between September and April. It is run by a committee of local volunteers, and since September 2012 has also been showing Live screenings from The National Theatre and The Royal Opera House in London. The programme and further details are available on the website www.tideswellcinema.com.

The Oscar nominated film “Captain Phillips” has been chosen as our April film. It is to be shown on Thursday 24th April. (Guests – £4.75). Those who have already seen this recently released film say it is fantastic, and it has been reviewed as “smart, powerfully acted, and incredibly intense”. Starring Tom Hanks (“a brilliant performance”), it is the true story of Captain Richard Phillips and the 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates – the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in 200 years. The film focuses on the relationship between Captain Phillips and the Somali pirate captain who takes him hostage. Both men find themselves eventually at the mercy of forces they cannot control.

Meals are available at The George before the performance. (We also have a film in May, as we are rescheduling the Italian film “Il Postino”, to be shown on 15th.)
